G was a solo hiker who intends someday to hike a long section of the Appalachian Trail—perhaps the whole thing, I don't recall. My friends and I were practicing navigation on our own, and our team led her along her way. (She was navigating with her phone, but had no map.)

We took her along with us as we made an intentional bushwhack through mountain laurels as the rain began, then intensified for the next few hours. Happily, we bashed through the woods, made it out to the trail on the other side, and parted ways.

Within about an hour, we heard on our radios that another of our teams had taken on a lost solo hiker; in about 45 minutes she had gotten bogged down when the trail led into a swampy area, and her condition had deteriorated rapidly.

They were able to give her some dry clothes, feed her, and lead her out to safety... but it was a big time lesson to me and my friends about really paying attention to the state of people we're moving with, to stop and listen.
