The first year we did this hike through the woods, we were instructed to follow a compass bearing—and specifically a line. That is, we needed to avoid moving sideways, even if still heading in basically the same direction.

This works, but can be pretty slow.

When this picture was taken, we were trying a similar tactic, but with a much looser sense of orienteering; we traveled in a general direction but didn't worry about a particular line. Much faster!
